  • Two local community members were honored by the Allen County Board of Commissioners at a New Haven ceremony this week as they received the Linda and Jerry Vandeveer Impact Award and the inaugural Public Safety Scholarship (recognizing their commitment to service).  WFFT-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Google's Fort Wayne project (Project Zodiac) is developing on a 900-acre site near Adams Center following rezoning and significant tax incentives. The company seeks to use diesel backup generators which has raised local concern over pollution despite a $1.2 million wetland conservation investment.  WFFT-TV
  • The Fort Wayne Street Department will resume leaf collection in central neighborhoods on Tuesday, Dec. 16 to complete the first round and will begin service in south neighborhoods on Dec. 22 if weather permits; additional rounds are set for early January.  Around Fort Wayne
  • West Central Fire Protection District is facing rising equipment costs and delays, as Chief Gale Stelzer II said the district must spend $1.3 million on a new Harris engine (scheduled for delivery in February or March instead of the originally planned Oct/Nov).  The Journal Gazette
  • At a forum held at the Grand Wayne Convention Center about Google's new $2 billion data center, over 200 residents expressed frustration when lengthy presentations left only 30 minutes for public questions, and officials promised future sessions to address community concerns.  WFFT-TV
  • Indiana lawmakers advanced SB 70 on Dec. 10 to relocate the Rising Sun casino to Fort Wayne or another Allen County site — pending approval. The bill would impose a $25m fee, require a $500m investment, and direct wagering taxes to mental health and addiction services effective July 1.  WFFT-TV
  • The Fort Wayne Street Department will resume leaf collection in central neighborhoods on Tuesday, Dec. 16, with the first round ending by Dec. 19 and the second in south neighborhoods starting Dec. 22 (weather permitting). Residents must rake leaves to the park strip by 7:00 a.m. on pickup day.  WFFT-TV

  • Donors can support local first responders by joining the 31st Annual Allen County Battle of the Badges blood drive from Dec. 15 to 20 at the Red Cross Donation Center and Lutheran Hospital Blood Donation Center; eligible donors will receive an exclusive T-shirt (fwbattle) while supplies last.  US 93.3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Matthew Brown scored less than five minutes into the Komets game against the Kansas City Mavericks on Dec. 12 — sparking over 3,000 stuffed toys tossed from the stands onto the ice.  WFFT-TV
  • Northeast Indiana hosted 29 high school basketball games under the IHSAA boys — girls schedule Friday night, giving local fans a packed doubleheader of hoops action.  WFFT-TV
  • Eva Hallman, a 22-year-old Butler University senior, became the first woman to handle play-by-play broadcasting for the Indy Fuel, fulfilling her lifelong love for hockey that started in Fort Wayne rinks. She now calls games with veteran broadcaster Andrew Smith — paving the way for women in sports broadcasting.  WOWO
