  • Volunteers at the Christmas Bureau sorted donated presents inside the warehouse on Tuesday, Dec. 9 to help 370 families receive holiday gifts, as case managers prepared items for pickup.  WFFT-TV
  • Fort Wayne students are organizing a toy drive to help local families in need. Donations can be dropped off at participating schools and community centers this week.  21Alive
  • Residents can join a free Winter Solstice Walk/Ride and campfire on Sunday, Dec. 21 at Salomon Farm Park. Hosted by DLZ and city partners, the event begins at 5:30 p.m., offering a 6.5-mi bike ride and 1.65-mi walk so participants should bring flashlights and festive lights + lanterns.  WFFT-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The East Allen County Schools board approved a $93,500 contract on Tuesday with Education Elements to address disproportionality in discipline rates among student groups. The project will begin next month + end in June, with improvements integrated into the district’s strategic plan.  The Journal Gazette

  • The Senate Public Policy Committee voted 8-0 on Tuesday, Dec. 9 to allow Rising Star Casino to relocate from Ohio County to Fort Wayne or Allen County. Senate Bill 70 by Sen.   • City officials and Greater Fort Wayne Inc. hosted a forum on Dec. 9 at Grand Wayne Center to share details about the planned Google data center, where representatives from Google, Indiana Michigan Power & City Utilities shared presentations and collected questions by phone or on index cards.  WOWO

  • Lutheran Hospital deactivated a left ventricular assist device for 35-year-old Mitchell Evenson last month after his heart regained strength (fewer than 10 such cases have occurred), emphasizing advanced care that has added years to many lives.  21Alive
