COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In 2025, Red Cross volunteers from the Northeast Chapter answered over 200 local disasters—mostly home fires—to help families with safe shelter, meals and support. The group said the need for more Disaster Action Team volunteers remains high as many people rely on its aid during the busy holiday season.  US 93.3
  • DANA United Steel Workers Local 903 and Meijer donated over $24,000 to the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program—an effort to provide toys and clothing for children facing financial hardship during the holidays—and more than 2,000 local children are set to receive support.  21Alive
  • Sandra D’s Italian Garden Restaurant (1330 S. Main St. in Auburn) will host the Soup for the Soul fundraiser on Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with freewill donations benefiting Woodburn Christian Children’s Home.  KPC News

  • On Tuesday, Fort Wayne Community Schools explained it would not issue delays or cancellations amid parental concerns—unlike other local districts that imposed two-hour delays.  21Alive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Wayne’s Solid Waste Department and GFL Environmental are urging residents to clear snow from streets and bins for safe garbage and recycling pickup during winter weather — trucks need room to work. Crews work with the Street Department to plow and salt icy roads so services can resume the next day.  WOWO
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker welcomed 14 recruits from the 98th class, 16 from the 99th class, and two firefighters from the Huntington Fire Department at the Public Safety Academy on Monday. The recruits will complete 13 to 21 weeks of fire-based training—earning seven certifications with graduation set for February 26 and April 23.  US 93.3
  • Fort Wayne city leaders announced a winter plan that will open a 24-hour, seven-day shelter to help residents during early winter weather, with local nonprofits working to provide warming stations and overflow shelter with about 55 beds for single women, families and men in a family unit (single men must use the Rescue Mission).  21Alive
  • Rep. Craig Snow filed House Bill No. 1038 on Monday in the Indiana General Assembly to change gaming rules and allow a casino in Allen County, sending the bill to the House Committee on Public Policy. If the bill passes, local leaders must agree to betting before the state holds a call for applications — the Indiana Gaming Commission will review the plans.  The Journal Gazette

  • Indiana hospitals made progress in lowering health care costs as national rankings placed the state 8th-best—an improvement from previous years. Hospital efforts and new state laws that cap prices and require clear billing have helped keep insurance premiums in check for local families.  WOWO
