COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Glick Philanthropies donated $7,500 on Friday to Community Harvest Food Bank, providing 30,000 meals for families facing rising hunger amid a pause on SNAP benefits. The funds will support food programs like mobile and on-site pantries across nine counties as community needs continue to grow.  WANE 15
  • Night of Lights will return to downtown Fort Wayne on November 26 to launch the holiday season with festive lightings that include Santa, his reindeer, a Merry Christmas wreath, a drone show, and indoor activities at various city venues – the event is part of HolidayFest and marks the start of seasonal celebrations downtown.  21Alive
  • The City of Fort Wayne’s Greenways and Trails Department will host National Take a Hike Day on November 17 at noon at the Pufferbelly Trailhead at the Parkview Family YMCA.   • The University of Saint Francis is inviting the public to join festive Christmas events from December 5 to December 9—offering tours of the historic Brookside mansion, photo sessions, a family breakfast with St. Nicholas, and a lake lighting with a living nativity scene.   • The Embassy Theatre will host Down the Line 20 on February 21 at 7 p.m. featuring five local bands paying tribute to music from the 60s to the 2000s+ tickets start at $20 at the box office or $23.50 online with higher prices the week of the show.  Around Fort Wayne

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Northeast Indiana schools are competing today in the ISSMA Marching Band State Finals in Indianapolis—one local school will perform an exhibition piece to highlight regional talent. The event will test the bands’ skills as they vie for statewide recognition.  WFFT-TV
  • Ten schools in northeast Indiana earned a Purple Star designation on Friday—an honor from the Indiana Department of Education that recognizes a strong commitment to service members, veterans, and military-connected students and families. The designation, which lasts three years, requires schools to have a dedicated liaison, dedicated webpage, in-school display, military event, and board resolution supporting military families.  21Alive
  • Almost 200 northeast Indiana students must repeat third grade after failing a key literacy test, state education officials said—data from the new IREAD dashboard show these numbers—and about 700 local students advanced due to a good cause exemption and will receive extra reading help.  The Journal Gazette

  • Today, the Allen County Council of Veterans Organizations hosts its annual Veterans Day Parade along Parnell Avenue at 11:00 a.m. with a ceremony following at the Memorial Coliseum, and parade groups will begin gathering at 10:00 a.m. (at the Nettie Ave and Parnell Ave booth).  Around Fort Wayne
  • Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker announced the first recipients of $1.002 million in opioid settlement funds to expand treatment, prevention, recovery—and harm reduction services for opioid and substance addiction. The National Opioid Settlement Committee reviewed applications and recommended grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, with funding scheduled through 2038.  Around Fort Wayne
  • Local members from nearly a dozen political and environmental groups have united to oppose Google's $2 billion data center project (located on Adams Center Road) as they train citizens to condense comments for next week's public hearing on adding 140 backup diesel generators. They worry that diesel fumes, wetland damage and increased water use could hurt local health, property costs and the ecosystem (with permits already allowing extra generators), and they plan to fight the project permit by permit.  The Journal Gazette
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker announced the first recipients of opioid settlement funds totaling $1,002,000+ these funds will support prevention, treatment and recovery programs for those affected by opioid and substance abuse in Fort Wayne. The settlement payments run through 2038 and were allocated by the National Opioid Settlement Committee after reviewing proposals submitted last fall.  US 93.3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nearly 941,000 bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco sold at Costco were recalled after bottles shattered and caused a laceration—consumers in affected states, including Indiana, are advised to discard the product and contact Ethica Wines for a refund.  WANE 15
