  • McDonald’s restaurants across Indiana will donate 10% of all app sales on October 21 to local high schools, helping to fund sports programs. Each of the 184 locations has chosen a nearby school to receive at least $250—continuing a fundraiser that began in Ohio.  WOWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southwick Elementary pre-K students visited the new school construction site and wore hard hats and safety vests to see heavy machinery and listen to workers read a construction site story. The nearly 100,000-square-foot building, which will replace the overcrowded Southwick east of Prince Chapman Academy, is expected to open in two years (with design by Garmann Miller and Weigand Construction).  The Journal Gazette
  • Today marks the start of National School Bus Safety Week—local transportation and safety leaders in Fort Wayne urge drivers to stop when red lights flash near school buses. A national survey shows over 39 million potential violations each year, and officials say obeying the rule creates a safer ride for children.  WOWO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers planted 49 trees at Northside Park and removed invasive species at Sweeney Park East during Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation’s annual Great Tree Canopy Comeback event last Saturday—an effort that has added over 3,000 trees to county parks since 2001. The project aims to restore tree canopy and boost environmental and public health benefits in the community.  WFFT-TV
