CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Wayne shelter held a meeting on Oct. 14 to discuss how domestic violence and animal abuse are connected—officials noted that mistreatment of pets can indicate larger issues at home.   • At a recent meeting, the FWCS Board of Trustees heard a proposal to raise teacher salaries—officials said further discussions will occur at upcoming sessions.  21Alive
  • Fort Wayne Community Schools secured nearly $20 million from a federal GEAR UP grant to support most 6th and 7th graders at 10 high-needs middle schools and its virtual academy over seven years. District officials said the board unanimously approved the funding, which provides about $2.8 million each year and includes a $2,500 scholarship for eligible students — a move expected to boost academic performance and future college readiness.  The Journal Gazette

  • The Fort Wayne City Council will review a $9 million plan to upgrade the Illinois Road trail in an upcoming meeting. The project will create a new walking and biking path for local residents — officials will discuss the details soon.  21Alive
  • Today, a private project begins on St. Joe Center Road between Maplecrest Road and Jonathon Oaks Boulevard to install a passing blister that will cause intermittent flagging until October 22.
