COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 'Revin Up for Riley' fundraiser is scheduled for this weekend to support Riley and bring local community members together. Organizers say the event will include activities and food—details will be shared as the event approaches.  21Alive
  • After a temporary suspension, MidWest America Federal Credit Union said the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program is now accepting toy donations in Allen County—over 70 local businesses have set up more than 120 drop-off locations where donors can bring new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 1.  21Alive
  • Income-eligible customers who need help with gas bills can apply for NIPSCO’s energy assistance program—applications opened on October 1 and run until May 31, 2026, or until funds deplete—which offers up to $500 to help cover bills. NIPSCO said the program is designed to help customers prepare for winter heating.  21Alive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • City officials said a study on historic preservation & heritage tourism was released yesterday and found that local rehab projects have attracted $340 million in investments while supporting 258 jobs each year since 2001. The report showed that in 2024, heritage visitors spent over $313 million, creating about 3,000 jobs, and that historic districts had homes valued 13 percent higher with 139 direct and 90 indirect jobs made over 15 years.  21Alive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paul Harding Junior High School students built a robot during the Kids Robotics Workshop at New Haven Jr./Sr. High School Tuesday morning—teams in grades 7 and 8 learned coding, robotics and engineering from STEM mentors. The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation partnered with Google and East Allen County Schools to guide the workshop—helping students prepare for future challenges.  The Journal Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Transportation said overnight (on Wednesday) that the new off-ramp from southbound I-469 to U.S. 24 opened while the existing ramp closed for concrete paving, and drivers are advised to use the alternate on-ramp until a new loop on-ramp from U.S. 24 to southbound I-469 is expected by the end of October. INDOT noted that all work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.  21Alive
  • Gov. Mike Braun visited the Indiana State Police post in Fort Wayne today to recognize troopers for seizing 34 illegal firearms and intercepting 15 pounds of fentanyl and 2,500 drug pills—he also toured posts in Indianapolis and West Lafayette to highlight statewide efforts that include over 100 arrests on drug trafficking charges and additional seizures of dangerous substances.  The Journal Gazette
  • Allen Superior Court in Fort Wayne is accepting applications for its next chief administrative officer—qualified candidates must apply by Oct 17 as the role will be filled no later than Dec 26 with a salary of $142,575.  WOWO
  • Today, Allen County officials teamed up to warn residents about the risks of lithium-ion batteries in devices like phones and laptops. They explained that damaged batteries can overheat — causing fires or explosions if not handled properly.  The Journal Gazette
  • State Rep. David Abbott joined Gov. Mike Braun, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, and Indiana agriculture officials at the Statehouse to sign a letter of intent with Taiwan to support Hoosier farmers. The agreement shows that Taiwan will purchase nearly $6.4 billion in corn and soybeans from 2026 to 2029—an effort to boost trade ties.  US 93.3

  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and local hospitals are offering free or low-cost mammograms—health experts urge women to start yearly screenings at age 40 to catch the disease early.  WOWO
  • Parkview Physicians Group announced Wednesday that it is now offering flu shot clinics across northeast Indiana to help residents protect against the flu season — the vaccine is available for ages six months and older with a high-dose option for seniors and both appointments and walk-ins are accepted.  21Alive
