COMMUNITY NEWS

  • D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Homes is celebrating 100 years with a public open house at its Lakeside Park location today, starting at 12:30 p.m.—Mayor Sharon Tucker will present a proclamation naming the day in the company’s honor.  WOWO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sweetwater is planning to hire over 100 seasonal workers at its climate-controlled distribution center on US Highway 30 West in Fort Wayne to meet higher holiday demand, offering pay from $15 to $17.50 per hour with a $1 time and attendance bonus — positions include first, second, third shifts as well as weekend-only and full-time weekend options. Applicants should bring a current resume to the hiring event or apply online.  US 93.3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Wayne’s Pennsylvania Produce Terminal Historic District is now on the National Register of Historic Places—the first listing in the East Central Neighborhood—and honors 1920s produce warehouses designed by local architect Alvin M. Strauss and renovated by MKM using tax credits.  US 93.3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allen County Commissioners approved moving to votecenters next year, and the county council will vote on a similar resolution Oct. 8—this step allows the county to submit the plan to the state to become an official votecenters county.  The Journal Gazette
  • Judge Brent Ecenbarger was sworn in as the new Allen Superior Court judge on Friday at 12 p.m. at the Allen County Courthouse—he succeeds Judge Andrea Trevino, who stepped down to return to the private sector, and was appointed by Governor Mike Braun to serve until December 31.  21Alive
  • Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker and City Controller Pat Roller presented the 2026 proposed budget on Friday, noting that Senate Bill 1 cut $25 million in property tax revenue and led to a $8.8 million withdrawal from cash reserves for vital services. They detailed future investments in neighborhood infrastructure, park renovations, and public safety improvements — plans aimed at offsetting the fiscal challenges posed by the new tax structure.  21Alive
  • Allen County officials held a topping ceremony today at 2911 Meyer Road to update the public that the roof of the new jail is 70% complete—while the concrete floors are half finished. The project by Weigand Construction will ease overcrowding and expand capacity to over 1,330 inmates.  The Journal Gazette
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker and Controller Pat Roller shared the proposed 2026 budget today—Fort Wayne will see $25 million less in property tax revenue, which led to a scaled-back budget of $244.8 million and a trim of $855,500; the plan calls for shifting $8.8 million from cash reserves for key services and funds for neighborhood improvements, with City Council reviews beginning Oct. 7.  The Journal Gazette
  • The Three Rivers Ambulance Authority gave Allen County a 30-day notice to end its Emergency Medical Dispatch service on September 26 + a funding dispute led county commissioners to withdraw from their interlocal agreement. Ambulance responses will continue + officials warn that the change may affect emergency care as they work on next steps.  WOWO
  • City leaders in Fort Wayne drew nearly $9 million from the reserve fund and cut over $800,000 from the budget to fund a plan that will spend $31.7 million on roads, bridges, sidewalks and trails. The 2026 budget totals $254.8 million and will also invest in public safety and parks, including the Vann Family Crossing pedestrian bridge for the Pufferbelly Trail—actions taken in response to Senate Bill 1.  WFFT-TV
  • INDOT will close two I-69 ramps in Fort Wayne starting Monday for concrete patching, joint repair — and repaving, with repairs expected to last two weeks if weather permits. Crews will work on the ramps during this period, so drivers should expect delays.  21Alive

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Allen County Public Library partnered with local nonprofit Super Shot to offer free flu vaccines at ten branches for anyone aged 6 months and older—clinics started on September 26 with uninsured visitors asked to pay a $15 fee—with more sessions scheduled in October to help the community prepare for flu season.  US 93.3

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new parking garage is open at The Lofts at Headwaters Park on East Superior Street in downtown Fort Wayne—offering 420 daily and monthly parking spaces with 200 reserved for residents and employees. City officials said rates include a free first 15 minutes then $1 per hour up to a maximum of $8 a day—consistent with other city-owned lots.  21Alive

  • The Boys & Girls Club of Fort Wayne hosted its first game in the new Youth Sports League at Lutheran Park on Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Families cheered as Athletic Director Jakil Jelks said the league gives children a safe—supportive space that builds a new tradition in our community.  21Alive
