  • Alex Babich from Fort Wayne set a new world record by growing a sunflower to 35 feet and 9 inches, breaking his previous record and beating the record set in Germany. Guinness has received the documents for confirmation, and Babich said his achievement honors the support he received in Fort Wayne since he immigrated from Ukraine.  21Alive
  • A Fort Wayne man set a new world record for the tallest sunflower yesterday — the flower reached a height that beat previous records — as reported on September 8.  21Alive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pickup truck driver died in a crash just south of Fort Wayne on Monday, September 8 when his truck left the roadway, rolled several times, and struck an SUV—leaving a passenger in the SUV hospitalized in serious condition.  US 93.3

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fort Wayne Zoo welcomed a wattled crane chick that hatched on August 29 from parents Starling and Hannibal, marking the first successful wattled crane hatch in the zoo; the chick is exploring its tall grass habitat and may blend in with the background.  US 93.3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana University Fort Wayne announced a 5.5% jump in fall enrollment that brought the undergraduate total to 1,091. The growth shows the university’s focus on training local health professionals—Chappell noted the increase reflects strong demand for these programs.  WFFT-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross Indiana Region is urging Fort Wayne families to assemble emergency plans by preparing go-kits with food, water, and essential supplies.
