COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YLNI Farmers Market will remain outside every Saturday through October at Barr and Berry Streets next to the History Center. Market manager Ashley Wagner said shoppers will enjoy vendor stalls, local music, and seasonal events like a Pumpkin Hunt on Oct 4th—adding extra fall fun.  US 93.3
  • Registration is now open for the free 2025 Inspire Neighborhoods Conference—hosted by the City’s Community Development Division and Department of Neighborhoods at Electric Works on September 12 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration closing September 1. An awards dinner featuring keynotes by JR Jamison and Sharon Tubbs will follow at Chapman’s Brewing Company-Electric Works from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  US 93.3
  • Humane Fort Wayne got a special grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization as one of 119 groups chosen from 440 to support vet and dental care for senior dogs like Lillian—an 8-year-old rat terrier mix. The grant will help the group offer needed care and find new homes for these older dogs.  US 93.3

CRIME NEWS

  • A 20-year-old Fort Wayne man, Terrance T. Sanders Jr., was found guilty of murder and attempted murder related to a 2023 shooting that killed Ayvion Parker and injured his younger brother — he now faces up to 137 years in prison.  The Journal Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Sharon Tucker announced on August 28 the formation of the SB1 Fiscal Task Force to study a new state law that reduces property taxes and changes the local income tax. City Controller Pat Roller will lead the group that meets on September 2 to plan steps that keep public services steady—an effort to limit negative impacts for Fort Wayne residents.  Around Fort Wayne
  • The City of Fort Wayne now offers a Residential Accessibility Modifications Program that gives qualified homeowners a grant to improve accessibility for residents with a permanent disability. Applicants must own their home, live within city limits, and meet income requirements — grants are awarded on a first-completed, first-served basis with limited HUD funding.  Around Fort Wayne
  • Attorneys representing the Allen County Board of Commissioners, Sheriff Troy Hershberger, and several confinement officers filed a formal response on Aug. 15 to a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of James Shaffer who died after a suicide attempt in January 2024. The response admitted that Shaffer spent his final 5 hours on a 30 minute suicide watch in cell H9 with a phone posing a strangulation hazard—yet denied that jail staff were intentionally indifferent or directly involved.  21Alive

  • Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control reported an increase in feline panleukopenia cases and urged pet owners to keep cats’ FVRCP vaccines current to protect both kittens and adult cats. Their partner, Humane Fort Wayne, offered low-cost walk-in vaccines at 1333 Maycrest Drive—helping those who couldn't schedule an appointment with their usual veterinarian.  WOWO
