COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug. 16, Big Brothers Big Sisters held its sold-out 22nd Annual Brad Miller Gala, Auction and Golf Outing at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum—raising over $750K for its one-to-one mentoring program. Nearly 1,000 guests attended the event, which also featured golf outings on Aug. 17 and 18 and a performance by guest entertainer David Garibaldi.  KPC News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Wednesday morning, a woman was critically injured when her SUV crossed the center line on Flaugh Road and struck a utility truck near West California Road — the truck driver rescued her from the burning vehicle — as police continue investigating the crash.  US 93.3
  • A motorcyclist traveling north on Milan Center Road in northeast Allen County lost control after striking trees and a mailbox at 6 p.m. on Wednesday — deputies could not save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.  21Alive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 170 high school students gathered downtown Wednesday for Fort Wayne Community Schools' induction ceremony into the new student ambassador program promoting Schools of Success, where they received program blazers to model professionalism and serve as liaisons with local partners (a role designed to enhance community and school connections).  The Journal Gazette
  • Carroll High School was ranked as the best public high school in Fort Wayne by U.S. News & World Report — the school also finished among Indiana's top 15 and reached #998 nationally based on state tests and college readiness measures.  21Alive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fort Wayne City Council approved Tuesday a plan to expand the downtown DORA so it runs from Headwaters Park to Electric Works along the riverfront—officials said the move may boost restaurants and shops while some worry about nearby homes. A final vote will come at a later meeting.  The Journal Gazette
  • Dozens of Allen and Whitley County residents attended a public hearing at the Whitley County Government Center to address a proposal to rezone farmland near County Line Road as an agricultural production zone, with the owner assuring no animal feeding operation is planned—residents remain cautious about the potential for future developments. The Board voted 5—2 to send the proposal to county commissioners with no recommendation.  WFFT-TV
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker announced that applications for opioid settlement funds will open on September 2 and close at midnight on October 2—this funding will support individuals and families battling addiction, and the National Opioid Settlement Committee will provide recommendations by the end of October.  WFFT-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday the Indiana Department of Health reported that more than 10 babies died from sleep suffocation since the start of August—which is much higher than the usual two per week—and experts urged parents to use the ABC rule to keep infants safe.  21Alive
  • On August 16, two troopers on foot patrol at the Indiana State Fair saved a girl aged 14 who began choking on her lemon shakeup—administering the Heimlich Maneuver and summoning EMS to transport her for treatment.  21Alive
