  • On Aug 5, a Fort Wayne community garden began giving away free crops to passers-by—residents can pick up fresh produce at the garden's entrance.  21Alive
  • City officials announced that Open Streets Fort Wayne will offer over 100 free activities on the newly paved Calhoun corridor for biking, walking and playing on Sunday, August 17 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Public Works and the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory will give away free ice cream samples, backpacks and admission tickets + live music and kid-friendly events are also planned.  US 93.3

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities confirmed that two Fort Wayne residents died at their Morrow Way home on Sunday—Toni Lynn Ott, 45, was killed by a gunshot wound and James Derek Moreno, 47, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  WFFT-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Data shows gunfire was heard near Indiana schools 2,771 times between 2015 and 2024 in cities such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Gary — leaving students and teachers alarmed. School officials and child advocates say schools need more safety drills, counseling and community support to help students heal.  WFFT-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker announced more than $12 million will be invested in neighborhood projects (including street and sidewalk repairs, alley improvements, playground updates, and improved lighting) to enhance quality of life and address youth violence. The projects still require bidding and City Council approval, with legislation set to be introduced on August 12 and discussed on August 19 before final passage on August 26.  The Journal Gazette
