COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Open Streets Fort Wayne announced more than 100 activities for a free community event that will let families bike, walk, and play along over 20 blocks of the Calhoun corridor from noon to 4 p.m.—the event will also provide 1,500 free admission tickets from the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory and free drumsticks from Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream.  21Alive
  • Northwest Allen County Schools built a fully accessible playground for preschoolers transitioning to Perry Hill Elementary — supported by a $25,000 AWS Foundation grant and many local volunteers working on Tuesday, July 29 — and it will be fully playable when turf installation is complete on August 11.  WANE 15

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 3rd at about 2:54 p.m., Fort Wayne Police responded to a reported shooting on the 900 block of Morrow Way where two adults were pronounced dead—investigation is ongoing by police and county officials.  WOWO
  • Two Fort Wayne men have been charged with a combined 25 felonies in connection with an alleged dog fighting operation—Trevel Bell faces 10 felony counts for purchasing an animal for a fighting contest while Newton Arnold faces 15 felony counts for purchasing an animal for fighting and possessing a firearm illegally—after police rescued 22 dogs from a scene showing signs of abuse.  21Alive
  • The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a shooting on the 900 block of Morrow Way around 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, where officers found and pronounced two adults dead—investigation is ongoing into the cause of their deaths.  US 93.3
  • Lamont Cooley was found guilty last month for fatally stabbing Anthony Paul Wamue in Promenade Park in January—he was sentenced today to 60 years in prison.  The Journal Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne reminded drivers and families to follow key safety measures as students return to school—tips include obeying speed limits in school zones and using designated crosswalks. Authorities said extra patrols will be on the roads during school hours to enforce these measures.  WOWO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers will face a temporary ramp closure at I-469 and U.S. 24 this Saturday from 12 a.m. to 8 p.m. as crews work on concrete construction — they are advised to use alternate routes and drive slowly.  21Alive
  • Allen County commissioners will vote at 10 a.m. Friday on a new solar ordinance that sets rules for installing commercial solar panels and removes the Board of Zoning Appeals from oversight—commissioners are asking for more public email feedback before finalizing any changes.  The Journal Gazette
