- ➤ The redesigned Packard Park officially opened Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Sharon Tucker + local officials. The $1.9 million park now features new playgrounds, an event lawn, landscaping, and a walking path, and it will host an official celebration on October 4. US 93.3
- ➤ On Friday, August 1, the Fort Wayne Dragon Boat Races at Promenade Park offered free family activities and live cultural performances by the Chinese Friends and Family Association. Today, the event continues on the St. Marys River with a Dotting of the Eyes Ceremony at 9:30 a.m., final races at 3:00 p.m., and an awards ceremony soon after. US 93.3
- ➤ Today in Fort Wayne, community members can visit Pontiac Street Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free backpacks, hygiene products, immunizations, sports physicals, haircuts and braiding/styling—registration is required, while another event at 4526 Maplecrest Road offers free school supplies, complimentary haircuts and buy-one, get-one small shaved ice from 4 to 8 p.m. 21Alive
- ➤ Rev. Angelo Mante, executive director of Alive Community Outreach, has been awarded a Level III Certification from the University of Rhode Island’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies for his work promoting nonviolence in local schools and supporting homicide survivors; he said the honor reflects the commitment of his team + community partners and a ceremony is scheduled in Rhode Island to accept the award. - ➤ Napoleonic Days will be held at the Old Fort on Spy Run Avenue on August 9-10, showcasing reenactors from France and Coalition armies, local artisans and historical exhibits as families explore nearly 50-year-old fort buildings. - ➤ Citizens Action Coalition said a review of July electric bills shows that Indiana consumers are facing large increases with some utilities raising rates by as much as 27% and notes this is the highest jump in at least 20 years—critics argue that state lawmakers and Gov. Mike Braun have let utility-friendly legislation weaken oversight. - ➤ Fort Wayne Community Schools is hosting a back-to-school block party today at the Bill C. Anthis Center parking lot on South Barr Street from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for families to enjoy more than 50 booths, music, free snacks and backpack giveaways—gearing up for the school year that begins on August 7. 21Alive
- ➤ Animal lovers ages 5 and up will be able to join the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control’s Humane Education program Read-to-the-Animals on Monday, August 18 at 3020 Hillegas Road - participants will read with shelter animals from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and must register since space is limited. - ➤ Humane Fort Wayne moved its Wellness Clinic back to 1333 Maycrest Drive on Friday, August 1 to meet high demand for more space and longer operating hours, offering basic care six days a week. It also launched Clinic Plus to provide extra appointment-based services such as skin, ear and allergy treatment on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its Sharon Bodenhafer Critter Center at 901 Leesburg Road.
