CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Fort Wayne man is accused of attempted murder after a fight outside a home on the southeast side led to a shooting over the weekend that left one man in critical condition when he allegedly threatened a witness by saying 'I am going to smoke your son' before firing several shots and fleeing; he turned himself in Monday.  21Alive
  • FWPD arrested 39-year-old Jamarcus Williams on Saturday, July 12—with officers responding to a disturbance on Weisser Park Ave where a man was found with gunshot wounds—he turned himself in at Allen County Jail and now faces charges of aggravated battery and attempted murder.  WANE 15
  • Royal Davis, 38, was found guilty on multiple charges including felony murder for his role in a September robbery that led to Travis Gilbert's death and now faces up to 123 years and 6 months in prison with sentencing set for August 8—his verdict follows a high-speed chase and crash that injured a bystander.  WANE 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Allen County Schools set a cap of nearly $16 million for the new Leo fieldhouse project, with the current estimated cost at about $13.5 million across three phases. The board approved $11.3 million for the third phase—covering work on masonry, trades and roofing—and construction will finish in fall 2026.  The Journal Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Huntertown Wastewater Treatment Plant will begin phase three construction on Monday — updating its equipment and filtration systems. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2026.  WANE 15
  • The DEA North Central Laboratory in Chicago holds over 46,000 pieces of evidence including drugs seized in Fort Wayne, which are bagged, tested and stored until they are destroyed or used in court—local data shows that overdose deaths in Fort Wayne dropped to 99 in 2023 from higher counts in previous years.  WANE 15
  • The Bluffton Road Bridge project began Tuesday with traffic limited to one lane over the St. Marys River—this change will cause delays until October as longer red lights and a new eastbound signal head help clear the work zone. Motorists are urged to take alternate routes during this reconstruction phase.  WANE 15

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allen County health officials urge residents to remove standing water from gutters, tires, bird baths, and flowerpots to curb mosquito breeding — a step meant to help reduce the spread of West Nile virus. The county’s mosquito control program has been active since May and tested three mosquito samples for West Nile virus — officials advise wearing long sleeves and using EPA-registered repellent for protection.  WFFT-TV
  • Environmental Services Director Josh Blauvelt said residents can help prevent mosquitoes from breeding by emptying standing water from gutters, bird baths, and flowerpots. The mosquito control program began testing on July 7 and inspected breeding sites since May, with three samples testing positive for West Nile virus.  WOWO
