- ➤ The City of Fort Wayne’s fireworks show will light up downtown at the Indiana Michigan Power Center at 10 PM tonight, while nearby communities plan their own displays with Huntington’s event at dusk and Angola hosting a parade at 11 AM—festivities in Warren, Markle, Crooked Lake and Lake Wawasee add even more ways to celebrate Independence Day. - ➤ The City of Fort Wayne is asking artists to submit proposals to work with East Central Neighborhood residents on a permanent art installation, which is the second phase of the Public Art Commission’s SHOUT-OUT: Fort Wayne program. Project manager William Bryant Rozier will guide the process with input from community leaders, and a question-and-answer session will be held Friday, July 18, 2-3 p.m. with proposals due by 5 p.m. Friday, July 25 — a budget of $20,000 is available for materials, installation, and artist compensation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Literacy Alliance said Thursday that a federal funding freeze hurt core programs—like English language instruction and other key education services—and is urging locals to use an online form to ask lawmakers to restore the funds. The freeze has already troubled Fort Wayne Community Schools and may force some classes to close until new funds are found. The Journal Gazette

- ➤ Residents joined Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer, council members and City Utilities staff at the historic Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant on Wednesday to celebrate the 25-Year Directors Award from the Partnership for Safe Water—an honor recognizing 25 years of excellence and the plant’s ability to produce up to 72 million gallons of water per day for the community. - ➤ The Allen County Board of Commissioners launched the new NextRequest portal yesterday to make public records easier for residents to access and track, and to improve transparency. - ➤ City Utilities said that contractors began installing a new feeder main with a 12 inch diameter along Lahmeyer Road beginning mid-morning July 3, which closed the road to all traffic except local traffic between Trier Road and East State Boulevard. Detour routes are posted plus Maplecrest Road is the primary north-south detour as additional signage guides drivers, and the closure is expected to last through the end of August. US 93.3

- ➤ Parkview Health and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield extended their contract while they continue negotiations for a new agreement. The extension provides coverage through August 16 — some patients worry they may face higher costs if a deal is not reached. 21Alive
