COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Allen County Fair returns for its 36th year at the Fairgrounds and will run until Sunday, June 22. The fair will offer classic events like a Rodeo Tuesday, hot air balloon rides on Thursday—weather permitting, a demolition derby on Saturday, a country concert Friday featuring Josh Gracin and Emily Ann Roberts, and free admission for active military and veterans on Sunday with a donation of 5 non-perishable items per ticket.  WANE 15

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fort Wayne police confirmed that 48-year-old Michael Tarail Bright was fatally struck by a car in a hit-and-run crash near West Paulding Road and Calhoun Street Saturday night—local authorities are investigating the incident.  21Alive
  • Firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire on Tuesday morning in Waynedale while controlling flames in about ten minutes—three occupants evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.  US 93.3

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Allen County Public Library and its partners will host free Juneteenth events on June 19 that include a lecture at 3 p.m., a teacher field trip at about 4:15 p.m., and an exhibit available during regular library hours. The lecture will feature local experts discussing the Emancipation Proclamation — pre-registration is encouraged for both the lecture and field trip.  WANE 15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Utilities has proposed a 5-year plan to replace aging pipes and reduce flooding in over 200 Fort Wayne neighborhoods with improvements planned through 2029—this may raise monthly bills by about $12 for average water users. The rate increases, set at 3.5% for water, 2.1% for sewer, and 4.3% for stormwater, require approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and City Council and will be funded solely by customer rates.  WANE 15
  • Fort Wayne’s Public Works director reported that the city needs hundreds of millions to repair its streets, sidewalks and alleys after spending record amounts in recent years. He explained that projects include replacing 50 miles of sidewalks and fixing over 100 miles of alleys—efforts that will require annual infrastructure reports and may take up to 21 years to complete.  The Journal Gazette
  • Fort Wayne was named the 10th best-run city in America in a study that measured key areas such as budgeting, education, health, and transportation. City leaders overcame challenges from inflation and public safety—factors that the study compared with those in cities like Provo, Nampa, and Manchester.  WOWO
  • Volunteer Center and Volunteer Lawyer Program held a free presentation on Indiana’s Expungement Law and local legal assistance at Ivy Tech Community College’s Student Life Center from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The event was part of the Second Chance Initiative (which offers eligible low-level convictions, misdemeanors and arrest records a one-time chance to be sealed) for those meeting the requirements.  21Alive
