  • Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation launched its first-ever 5K Virtual Challenge yesterday— a five-day event inviting community members from Promenade and Headwaters Parks to complete a self-paced 5K walk, run, or crawl while exploring local art installations. Participants must use the My Virtual Mission App to log their progress and compete for a prize awarded to the best time as the challenge ends on Friday, May 30.  21Alive
  • On Monday, Rolling Thunder dedicated a wreath and unveiled a POW/MIA bench at Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum in Fort Wayne with Mayor Sharon Tucker present—marking the third Memorial Day visit and featuring a motorcycle Ride for Freedom event. The wreath honors more than 16,000 soldiers who died in service and more than 1,800 still unaccounted for.  21Alive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ferdinand Asende, a 19-year-old student from Fort Wayne Community Schools raised in a Tanzanian refugee camp who moved here in 2018 with his family, overcame many challenges to excel in tough classes. He will graduate next week at Memorial Coliseum—he plans to study business management at Indiana University and start an agricultural business in Fort Wayne—showing his promise as a local leader.  The Journal Gazette
  • Fort Wayne Community Schools and Allen County Public Library recognized eighth-grader Quinn Kilby for his astronaut reading design, unveiled at Jefferson Middle School Awards night on May 19. The new library card design—along with honors for 20 other student artists—will be used in a program that expands student access to educational resources and will begin circulating later this year.  Around Fort Wayne
  • Purdue University Fort Wayne announced a reduction in force of about 45 positions to address ongoing financial challenges, with plans to cut more than $6 million from its operating budget by July 1—these efforts will not affect academic degree programs as shared with the campus community on May 22.  Around Fort Wayne

  • The Allen County Memorial Day parade kicked off at 11 a.m. at the Coliseum on Monday, May 26th—featuring local participants—and ended with a ceremony honoring those who lost their lives in service. A procession on Parnell Ave featured local groups—police, fire and sheriff departments—supporting the event.  21Alive
  • U.S. Secretary Brooke Rollins approved Indiana’s federal waiver to ban candy and soda purchases with SNAP benefits, making the state the first to limit these items under taxpayer-funded food assistance. Gov. Mike Braun’s Make Indiana Healthy Again plan will see the new rule take effect Jan. 1, 2026 — a move aimed at shifting SNAP dollars toward healthier food options.  WFFT-TV
