  • A new bakery opened Friday in downtown Fort Wayne at the Union Street Market on Electric Works campus and now offers fresh bread and doughnuts. Owner Guy Carmeli said the bakery will serve customers Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)  21Alive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Fort Wayne man pleaded guilty to wire fraud related to a fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program loan and was sentenced to 24 months probation - including 10 months of location monitoring - and ordered to pay $23,332 in restitution after he falsely claimed to own an auto sales business to secure more than $20,000 in relief funds during the COVID-19 pandemic.  WFFT-TV
  • Fort Wayne police are investigating a shooting on the 4300 block of East State Boulevard after shots were fired around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night—one person was injured and their condition and suspect details have not been released.  US 93.3

  • Local residents are advised to review new Indiana property tax changes explained by experts that may affect their bills. The report details how the revised rules could benefit some property owners while raising costs for others.  WOWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fort Wayne Community Schools announced a new partnership with the YMCA and Champions of Greater Fort Wayne to offer before and after school childcare for elementary students (pre-K through fifth grade) starting in the 2025-26 school year. The service will run on school days, breaks, and summer with care from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m.  US 93.3
  • Fort Wayne native Jocelynn Hartwig, a full-time Microsoft engineer, launched nonprofit Marginal Entropy to teach coding and STEM skills using Minecraft Education Edition to underserved children ages 4 to 17—small class sizes help each child get personalized instruction—and the program will add AI lessons next season to boost learning.  KPC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting at 6 p.m. May 9, INDOT will close the northbound on and off ramps at Exit 326, C.R. 11A near Auburn for concrete patching—drivers should use Exit 329 to access C.R. 11A or Exit 317 to enter northbound I-69, and the ramps are expected to reopen at 7 a.m. May 12, though work is weather-dependent.  US 93.3
  • Dion Walker spent over 17 years in prison for a nonviolent drug offense and received clemency three days before President Biden left office (just before his final hours). He has been free for three months and now works at an auto glass company while reconnecting with his children and helping others get another chance.  The Journal Gazette
