COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Visit Fort Wayne announced Thursday that it has created the Allen County Sports Commission to advise on sports tourism investments. Senior Sports Development Manager Jazmín Zavala will lead the commission alongside local business and community leaders.  KPC News
  • Community Harvest Food Bank announced that Canstruction 2026 raised over 23,000 pounds of food with 100+ community members building can structures at Glenbrook Mall, where Central Noble Jr./Sr. High School earned the People’s Choice Award with 738 votes.  21Alive
  • STAR Financial Bank donated $2,000 to the Allen County Public Library Foundation to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that gives free books to encourage early literacy. Since its launch in 2024, the program has served over 10,000 local children with more than 100,000 books.  21Alive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data released Thursday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development showed that Fort Wayne metro's unemployment rate dropped to 3.2% in March from 3.5% last year, as the workforce grew by 580 and employment increased by 1,272.  KPC News

  • On Thursday, students at local colleges found Instructure's Canvas disrupted by a data breach when hackers from ShinyHunters posted a ransom message, blocking access to grades and assignments during finals week + prompting officials to warn against suspicious emails.  WOWO
  • The University of Saint Francis announced that President Lance Richey will resign June 30 after three years in his role and that Sister Maria Gemma Salyer will begin as his successor on July 1. Richey will take a yearlong sabbatical before returning as a theology professor in fall 2027.  The Journal Gazette
  • Fort Wayne teen Owen Johnson — already recognized for his acting work — is hosting a new educational web series, A2B, that shows how everyday products move from raw materials to finished items.  KPC News

  • The off ramp from southbound I-469 to Maysville Road was closed on May 8 for pavement replacement near the east side and will remain closed for about two months (drivers must detour via the U.S. 24 Exit and rejoin northbound at Exit 25).  21Alive
  • Downtown Fort Wayne asked officials today to slow plans to open a 24/7 homeless shelter at 333 E. Washington Blvd (the former BrightStar Care facility). The group said more time is needed for stakeholder input to assess the facility's impact on nearby properties.  The Journal Gazette
  • On Friday at 11 a.m., local law enforcement gathered at the Law Enforcement/Firefighters Memorial on North Wells Street to honor fallen officers from city, county, and state through remarks, musical performances and tributes — a solemn ceremony before National Police Week.  21Alive
