COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Leo-Cedarville Farmers Market will open its second season on May 8 in downtown Leo and run Thursday evenings from 4—7 p.m. through August. The market will offer local produce, flowers and handcrafted items to boost local business.  Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly
  • Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control received 70 cats last week, including 50 kittens, some of which were abandoned in a bag—now the shelter is calling for foster homes and offers fee-free adoptions until May 15. The shelter uses discounted fees and expanded hours to manage incoming animals.  WANE 15
  • Community Harvest Food Bank ended its Canstruction campaign today at Glenbrook Square with 24,102 cans and packages built into structures and weighing nearly 25,000 pounds to support its nine-county service area. Final votes from May 4 gave Central Noble Junior/Senior High School first place with 535 votes and special awards including Most Cans, Best Original Design, and Best Use of Labels (resulting in a $1,000 prize).  KPC News

  • Chuck Surack, founder of Sweetwater Sound, will speak to graduating classes and receive an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree on May 24 at Manchester University commencement ceremonies—graduate sessions start at 9 a.m. in Cordier Auditorium with the undergraduate event at 11 a.m.  Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 21, the Huntertown Utility Service Board awarded a $14 million contract to R Yoder Construction for a wastewater plant expansion—this project will include site improvements like work on ash tanks and air distribution systems and is partly funded by cash reserves and a $13 million sewer bond that closed on April 30.  Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly
  • On May 2, Mayor Steve McMichael announced at Schnelker Park that the New Haven Next program will provide $60 million for affordable housing and neighborhood improvements while teaming with local developer Eric Doden to boost investment in the area. The plan will upgrade 22 lane miles of streets and add trails to connect Fields of Grace with other community areas — a move aimed at securing a better future for New Haven's 16,500 residents.  Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly

  • On May 5, four Parkview hospitals and three Lutheran hospitals earned A grades in the spring Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades released by the national nonprofit—The Leapfrog Group.   • In April, Stillwater Hospice honored its 145 volunteers who provided end-of-life care and support—such as follow-up calls and administrative tasks—to about 250 patients across 12 counties.   • Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill spoke Monday night at the RemedyLIVE Texteractive fundraiser at the Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne to encourage open talks about mental health and share his own struggle with anxiety. The event has a goal of $125,000 and featured a trivia game and auction of a signed jersey—aimed at erasing the stigma around mental health.  The Journal Gazette
