ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hector Hinojosa Jr., 54, was struck while walking along U.S. 30 near Parker Street early Sunday and later died at a Fort Wayne hospital—driver McCoy Lucas, 30, said he tried to avoid him while driving in the right-hand lane in Warsaw.  The Journal Gazette
  • A Warsaw man was fatally struck on U.S. 30 early Sunday after a driver reported trying to avoid him near Parker Street, police said—Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office investigators are reconstructing the crash.  The Journal Gazette

  • A Chick-fil-A on Dupont Road will open soon and is hiring around 120 full- and part-time employees—owner-operator PJ Strengthn said the team will work together to serve the community.  WFFT-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory distributed over 15,000 plants and more than 2,300 seed packets to Fort Wayne elementary schools last week through the 99th School Children’s Flower and Vegetable Association program. The conservatory now seeks community volunteers to judge student-led plant shows later this year — entries will likely feature plants grown in the Lawton Park Greenhouse.  The Journal Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Moxie, the peregrine falcon nesting at the I&M building downtown, welcomed her first hatchling of the season. She laid three eggs on March 18, March 22, and March 28, and the young are expected to take their first flights at about six weeks of age.  21Alive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • INDOT began work on I-69 from the S.R. 3/U.S. 27 exit to the Union Chapel Road exit near Fort Wayne, and drivers must slow down for lane closures with speed limits of 55 mph in work zones and 45 mph when crews work—crews are doing asphalt resurfacing, pipe lining and a bridge deck overlay expected to finish by the end of October.  US 93.3
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker is accepting applications for the youth engagement council that offers Fort Wayne high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors a one-year chance to influence local government. The council will hold interviews for apps submitted by May 19 with sessions on May 27 or June 3, by June 16 with sessions on June 24 or July 1, and a final submission deadline on July 14 (interviews on July 22 or July 29).  WOWO
