CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fort Wayne police arrested Lantz Garrett, a 26-year-old man wanted on three active felony warrants—he barricaded himself in a home on the 3200 block of Dinnen Avenue Sunday morning and threatened officers with explosives—when chemical irritants prompted him to surrender just before 10:30 a.m. US 93.3
- ➤ On April 20, officers responded to a shooting at the 1600 block of Hinton Drive in Fort Wayne and pursued a suspect who fired at them during a chase into Whitley County—he was fatally shot following a brief standoff while an adult male victim from the initial incident later died at a hospital and one trooper sustained minor injuries from broken glass. US 93.3
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, Purdue University Fort Wayne announced that it will use an $803,000 grant from the Don Wood Foundation to install new labs and update equipment in a two-year plan aimed at boosting student learning and supporting the advanced manufacturing community. The first phase will upgrade the fluid and pneumatic lab and power machinery lab for fall use — later phases will add metallurgy and cybersecurity labs along with new courses. The Journal Gazette
- ➤ The Don Wood Foundation awarded an $803k grant to Purdue Fort Wayne’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science to update lab equipment+ and support training. In the fall semester, stage one will cover new equipment and training while stage two lets faculty design labs+ and courses to benefit advanced manufacturing businesses. 21Alive

- ➤ The Indiana Department of Transportation says a section of SR 124 near Bluffton will close for repaving and small structure construction on or after April 22 — drivers must use detour routes via SR 3 and SR 116. Crews will finish the work by early October as schedules may change with the weather. US 93.3
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Monday evening, Allen County Health Department officials announced two new measles cases, bringing the total to eight cases (three adults and five children) and warned that anyone not vaccinated remains at risk for infection. They said contact tracing uncovered hundreds of exposures and advised unvaccinated residents to quarantine for 21 days while over 400 people received vaccines at a free clinic (including the measles shot).
