GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials with Weigand Construction said Friday that workers have begun building the new $300 million Allen County Jail at 2911 Meyer Road and that the north half is ready for steel work—an important step before mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors start in June. The new jail will meet a federal order by replacing the overcrowded and aging facility downtown and will have its structure substantially complete by November 2027.  The Journal Gazette
  • Gov. Mike Braun's signature is the last step needed to make a Senate bill a law—Senate Bill 2 would require Healthy Indiana Plan members to work 20 hours a week—and it still needs federal approval. The legislation passed with a 37 to 10 vote and may cut 102,000 to 116,000 enrollees while some experts say it could raise costs and hurt those in need.  The Journal Gazette
