COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials launched Visit Fort Wayne’s Accessible Destination Action Plan on Tuesday to improve sidewalks, crosswalks and transportation so all community members can have better access — the five-year plan also calls for volunteer training and a summit for local business leaders.  The Journal Gazette
  • South Side Farmers Market marked its 100th season on Apr. 4 at its Warsaw Street location—continuing over a century of local tradition where vendors and shoppers connect over fresh produce and handmade goods every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a larger celebration is planned for early July.  The Waynedale News
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters raised over $270K at its Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser held in March (across Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, Noble and Steuben counties) to support mentorship programs for local youth.  The Waynedale News
  • Philanthropist Larry Lee gave $4 Million to Pearl Arts along with an annual $100K gift to fund music lessons for up to 220 FWCS students — the program already serves 550 students weekly and will expand local arts education for years to come.  The Waynedale News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eastside Junior-Senior High School will present The Addams Family in three shows at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Millie Hansen Auditorium (603 E. Green St); tickets cost $10 each at the door.  KPC News
  • Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation reopened the Desert House today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory. The reimagined space now features new desert specimens (including selections from North America and abroad) and improved visitor pathways.  The Waynedale News
  • Fort Wayne Dance Collective will present Choreographer’s Lab, a live dance experience featuring original works by emerging local choreographers at 437 E Berry St. The six shows are scheduled from April 30 to May 3, and tickets cost $15.  The Waynedale News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Indiana schools, including Washington Elementary (Fort Wayne), will receive free musical instruments through the new National Instrument Fund launched by Music Will and Sweetwater. Instruments will be delivered over the next month to help expand music programs at under-resourced schools.  WFFT-TV
  • The Foellinger Foundation awarded up to $2 million to the Boys and Girls Clubs for a free, five-week summer academic and enrichment program that offers morning lessons, field trips and projects while providing meals. The program will be hosted at community centers & local schools to support kids’ learning.  The Journal Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Little River Wetlands Project will host Earth Day Fort Wayne on Sunday, April 19 from 12 pm to 5 pm at Purdue Fort Wayne’s Environmental Resources Center. The free, family event offers live birds plus hands-on demos, food trucks and a 40-tree giveaway along the St. Joseph River.  The Waynedale News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials are tracking gasoline prices after Governor Mike Braun paused the state's 7% gasoline use tax for 30 days, with Attorney General Todd Rokita noting that average prices have dropped 20 cents per gallon while 19 stations show no change. Consumers should report any concerns on the state website.  WOWO
  • Mayor Sharon Tucker announced on Monday, Apr. 13 that 28 neighborhoods received over $119,000 in Community Development grants for placemaking, transit, landscaping, and branding projects. The awards have funded improvements like concrete connections and public art projects *supporting neighborhood revitalization*.  US 93.3
