COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four-time Olympian Chaunté Lowe will speak at the Rescue Mission's Raise the Bar Breakfast on May 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Parkview Mirro Event and Conference Center to share her message of hope and resilience that supports those overcoming homelessness.  The Waynedale News
  • Alive Community Outreach will launch its new Community Education initiative to train local groups in de-escalation, conflict management, and building healthier communities. The program, based on Kingian nonviolence, will offer practical tools to businesses, schools, churches and nonprofits.  The Waynedale News
  • Fort Wayne City Utilities won the Gold Medal for Municipal Water at the 36th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting; its water from the Three Rivers Filtration Plant impressed judges and topped entries from California and Colorado — marking its first international win after several top five finishes.  The Waynedale News
  • Lutheran Health Network is asking residents to donate peanut butter during its annual Jars of Love Drive, running until March 30. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Homestead High School basketball standout Myah Epps, 18, was injured Friday near West Jefferson Boulevard and Getz Road when her car crashed; she was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for back surgery and remains in stable condition.  WOWO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists are invited to join Clean Drains Fort Wayne: Be River SmArt by submitting storm drain mural designs; applications close April 12, final selections are announced May 11, and mural painting takes place August 15-23. Community volunteers will also help mark and clean storm drains to protect local rivers.  The Waynedale News
  • Born Again Quilts invites local quilters to celebrate Worldwide Quilting Day on Saturday, Mar. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 4005 South Wayne Ave + bring a special quilt to share its story and possibly be featured in the Waynedale News.  The Waynedale News

  • Questa Education Foundation launched its new Questa Compass Fund Finder today — a tool that helps Northeast Indiana learners search for scholarships, grants and financial aid for college, workforce credentials or training. Local foundations support the project to reduce financial barriers for education.  The Waynedale News
  • Purdue Fort Wayne hosted Women in Construction Day today to inspire young women to explore careers in construction management. The event featured networking, panel discussions (including advice from Andi Adams of Crosby Excavating), campus tours, and hands-on experiences to highlight career opportunities.  The Journal Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spring in Fort Wayne offers pleasant weather but sudden severe storms may quickly change the day. Local emergency officials advise residents to rely on multiple alert systems such as Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio (if available), and outdoor warning sirens that are tested monthly at fire stations.  The Waynedale News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting on or after March 16, INDOT will begin resurfacing and bridge construction on S.R. 930 between I-69 and East Washington Boulevard — drivers should expect intermittent lane closures, including a week-long closure at Goshen Road and Investment Boulevard, with work continuing until the end of November.  US 93.3

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Brightpoint and MidWest America Federal Credit Union have launched a pilot program today to help low and moderate income families get home mortgages in the area — the program uses a $600,000 reserve fund to back loans up to $225,000 and offers housing counseling to ready buyers.  The Waynedale News
