COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighborhood leaders can join City workshops at Foellinger Foundation (520 E. Berry St.) on Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m. or Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. to learn the grant application process; applications open April 6 and close May 8, with awards to be announced early June.  US 93.3
  • Alive Community Outreach launched a peace education initiative to strengthen community ties. The program will offer conflict resolution and trauma awareness training for schools, businesses, and community groups (inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s nonviolence principles).  WFFT-TV
  • On March 5, the Foellinger Foundation approved $1,788,095 in grants for nonprofits serving youth and families throughout Allen County (Youth Development, Capacity Building, and Special Opportunity).   • Glo Wild returned Thursday night at the Fort Wayne Zoo, offering a vibrant evening event for local visitors. The recurring event gave guests a unique nighttime experience at the zoo.  21Alive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fort Wayne Community Schools delivered a 17-page case on Thursday against the proposed charter school (Williams Arts and Technology Academy) slated to open at Pilgrim Baptist Church in August, noting potential duplication of services and concerns over finances, staffing, and facility compliance.  The Journal Gazette
  • Indiana’s new school accountability system was officially adopted by the State Board of Education on Wednesday – pending a few final signatures – and introduces a redesigned A-F grading model intended to better reflect student progress, literacy and post-graduation readiness.  KPC News

  • Hoosier Action urged Gov. Braun to veto the proposed public camping ban (SB 285) because it may create extra obstacles for homeless residents by offering no new services. Gov. Braun must decide by March 9.  21Alive

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Infant & Maternal Mortality Conference took place yesterday at Parkview Mirro Center, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and focused on strengthening collaboration among healthcare professionals and community organizations (hosted by Healthier Moms and Babies) to improve pregnancy and postpartum care.  21Alive
  • Parkview Health announced on Thursday it will expand its Family Birthing Center at Randalia Hospital by adding a 12-room Level II Special Care Nursery — six postpartum rooms. The $10.8 million project will support 100 deliveries and 75 clinical roles, with construction set to begin by the end of 2026.  21Alive

  • Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz died Wednesday at 89. Local fans, including magistrate Phillip Houk from Fort Wayne, reflected on his legacy and plan to honor his influence at upcoming Fighting Irish games.  21Alive
