COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fort Wayne working parents face child care challenges as high costs and long waitlists force many to rely on programs like New Covenant Academy (the CCDF waitlist now exceeds 33,200 children).  The Journal Gazette
  • Fort Wayne UNITED held its Friday Tie Day kickoff at The Pearl, inviting 70 high school students from East Allen and Fort Wayne Community Schools to meet local leaders (including YMCA’s Wayne Kelly) as keynote Anthony Ponds urged them to make choices that shape their future.  The Journal Gazette
  • A $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne will fund lighting + seating upgrades at Colonial Heritage Wetlands to improve safety and year-round access for residents.  21Alive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A bill to ban cellphones, smartwatches, and gaming devices during the school day passed the Senate and is on Governor Braun’s desk for signature. Schools will still allow school-supplied devices to help focus class time.  US 93.3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indiana DOT crews will begin a bridge deck overlay on eastbound I-469 Monday over Maplecrest Road in Allen County between mile markers 28 and 29. Two lanes remain open but eastbound traffic will temporarily shift using a median crossover while a northbound Maplecrest on-ramp closes later.  WFFT-TV
  • Fort Wayne’s board approved up to $1.5 million to fund master planning for the North River District (including a $182,500 payment to PB Development) to create a 160,000 sqft fieldhouse that will boost youth and adaptive sports tourism across the 29-acre site.  US 93.3
  • City officials said they are reviewing S.B. 285, a public camping ban sent to Governor Mike Braun after a 28 to 22 Senate vote, and noted that it will not change the current policy of issuing 72-hour clearance notices for public encampments. The Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services is working with social service agencies to open a 24/7 Homeless Services Center (as shelter beds are urgently needed).  21Alive
  • Gov. Mike Braun will sign a bill that would allow a casino in Allen, DeKalb or Steuben counties if voters back it in November — the plan includes a national open bidding process managed by the Indiana Gaming Commission that could bring over $500 million in private investment.  The Journal Gazette
