COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chapman's Brewing Company presented a $1,206.48 check to the Do it Best Foundation on Jan.13 as a celebration of its 2025 Taco Tuesday series held at the Electric Works campus. The foundation will use proceeds to support local non-profit initiatives while Taco Tuesday will expand to monthly lunches in 2026.  KPC News
  • Over the past seven months, Safe Haven Baby Boxes helped four mothers safely surrender newborns at local hospitals, ensuring the babies are placed for adoption. The group has assisted 75 surrenders since 2017 and continues to support families (says CEO Monica Kelsey).  WFFT-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After a weekend winter storm, select restaurants extended their Savor Fort Wayne deals that ran January 14 to 25. Over 50 establishments participated to help local diners support their favorite spots during a slower business period.  21Alive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported that December unemployment was 3.5%—below the 4.4% national rate—and labor force participation hit 63.6% (3,495,276 workers) while private employment numbered 2,849,500. By Dec. 31, there were 83,797 open jobs with 25,414 unemployment claims continuing as of early January.  WFFT-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Questa Education Foundation announced today a $5 million multi-year grant from The James Foundation to help double its student support by 2030. It will receive funds over five years to offer low-interest, forgivable loans across 11 northeast Indiana counties.  The Journal Gazette
  • Cora Reinbolt (an Ag and Natural Resources Educator) advised livestock producers to boost shelter, water access, and food supply as frigid weather tests animal health. Producers are reviewing operations now to prevent frostbite and respiratory issues in their animals.  US 93.3
  • State lawmakers are considering a bill to repeal the Care of Students with Diabetes Act—also known as Hunter's Law—that has aided diabetic students since 2007. The American Diabetes Association warns that removing these protections may leave families struggling to manage the disease.  US 93.3
  • Registration is now open for Girl Scouts summer camp programs serving girls in grades K-12, offering outdoor activities including horseback riding and archery at sites like Camp McMillen (Huntertown) and Camp Logan (Syracuse).  KPC News

  • Goshen Health announced a letter of intent to partner with Parkview Health to extend its reach into Elkhart County. The process (a 90-day due diligence and regulatory review) will not change patient care, staffing, or day-to-day services.  The Journal Gazette

  • Fort Wayne FC practiced today at The Plex as construction on Fort Wayne FC Park continues. The new stadium, expected to finish in spring and holding 9,200 fans, will host its first home game on May 2 against Charlotte Independence (located on Bass Rd.).  WFFT-TV
