COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana will start the 2026 cookie season on Friday, Jan. 30 by debuting Exploremores — a sandwich style treat with rocky road ice cream flavors. Orders through March 16 will support local Girl Scout camps and activities.  WFFT-TV
  • Warming centers across the state are operating to provide a warm refuge during winter. Residents can get nearby locations by texting their ZIP code to 898-211 (available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and can also call Indiana 211 (operating 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday).  WFFT-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The 2025 growing season saw Indiana farmers face a mix of cool, wet weather and late drought that affected corn and soybean yields. Seed Genetics Direct tested 25 field sites to gather data, and the results will help farmers plan for 2026 + future planting strategies.  US 93.3

  • The Allen County Public Library will host the Portraits of Lives Affected by Incarceration art exhibit starting Jan. 17 at the Main Library's Krull Gallery, featuring multimedia works from incarcerated artists in partnership with national organizations.  WOWO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, city officials announced that Fort Wayne received $50 million in New Markets Tax Credits allocation authority from the federal government (expected to generate about $10 million in cash for projects in low-income communities).  The Journal Gazette
  • Fort Wayne has been awarded $50 million in New Markets Tax Credits from the U.S. Treasury Department, a boost expected to generate about $10 million in investment. Mayor Sharon Tucker announced the award Tuesday to support local job creation, workforce training, housing and health care initiatives.  WOWO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Fort Wayne Community Schools board named Noah Smith as its new president on Monday, replacing Maria Norman. He will lead the district serving 28,200 students as it navigates budget challenges from recent property tax reforms.  The Journal Gazette

  • Allen County recorded over $3 billion in building permit value in 2025 with projects including a Google Data Center and a new jail. County commissioner Joe Hutter said development will be stronger in 2026 as fees rise and lower interest rates may spur building on thousands of residential lots.  WFFT-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Parkview Health has partnered with Undue Medical Debt to forgive over $64 million in medical debt for 35,694 patients — qualifying letters will be mailed this week in Fort Wayne. The move supports the provider’s ongoing efforts to lower healthcare costs.  WOWO
